Saddled With Stress:
Understanding Sports Psychology and its Necessity to the Equestrian Sport
Abstract
The equestrian sport is beyond mentally draining and one with an extreme amount of pressure on both its human and equine participants. It is also a sport where not only are there multiple brains involved, but brains that cannot communicate with one another through the same spoken language. This pressure, along with the core challenges of the sport itself, can often lead to defeat in a horse show. Sports psychology is one of the best tools to help with this dilemma, however. The techniques used to reach peak performance include goal-setting, self-talk, visualization, and relaxation. There remains much to be learned about sports psychology’s impact on the brain, especially with regard to its potential in equine sports.
